Council’s Short Story Competition Enters its Fifth Year

Monday, 4 July 2016

Central Coast Council libraries are calling all aspiring writers to get involved in this year’s annual Short Story Competition, one of the most anticipated library events on the calendar.

Now in its fifth year, the competition offers an incredible opportunity for local writers of all ages to have their creative efforts recognised and published.

Council’s Section Manager of Library Services, Ms Andreas Edwards, said this year will be the first time the competition has been expanded to all Central Coast residents.

“I am absolutely thrilled we are extending this fantastic opportunity to our all of our region’s residents, following the formation of the new council,” Ms Edwards said.

“We have so much amazing talent in our own backyard and love we are able to provide this chance for our creative literary community to shine.

“The calibre of entrants gets better each year and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us this year.”

Entries for the 2016 Short Story Competition will be accepted from Monday 11 July until 5pm Friday 5 August.

Stories can be up to 1500 words and there will be four categories this year; Junior (5-8 years), Primary (9-12 years) Young Adult (13-17 years) and adult (18+ years).

“Improving literacy and reading skills is at the crux of this competition, which is why we have split the younger age group this year,” Ms Edwards added.

“It is imperative we engage with children at an early age and let them discover the enjoyment reading and writing can bring; and this competition is a great way for kids to get started.

“The winner of each division will win an iPad air, with second prize receiving an iPad mini, and commended entries a book prize.”

“I believe everyone has a story to tell – even if you’ve never thought yourself much of a writer I’d encourage you to have a go.

“You never know how good you really are until you try.”

Entry forms and terms and conditions will be available on the website closer to the opening date but prospective entrants are encouraged to start writing their stories now.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held in late October in the Erina Room, The Hive, Erina Fair.
